Is Search Engine Submission Necessary?

Search Engine Submission, back in the earlier days of Google, Bing, Yahoo and the big dogs of search, submitting your website to the search engines was just how things were done. But, as we all know, the world wide web has come on leaps and bounds over the years, and what once was the done thing isn’t always needed now. So, should we still be submitting our sites, or is this as outdated as cord telephones and fax machines? Let’s check out the facts.

What is Search Engine Submission?

To start with the basics, search engine submission is a pretty simple process – it involves submitting a URL of a web page to a search engine, like Google, so that they can index it for their results. Some engines will just ask for the main URL of a website, crawling the rest of the site from that, whilst others will require each individual page’s URL to be submitted. So, why do it?

Benefits of Search Engine Submission

Traditionally, when the internet was still young and new, search engine submission did come with some benefits. First of all, it was a sure-fire way of making sure your website was included in the results and crawled by the engine – a pretty necessary step to running a successful site! In this way, it could also help you get more traffic and a better search ranking, boosting SEO.

Is it Still Necessary?

In the most basic answer, no – search engine submission isn’t necessary anymore. With most (if not all) search engines automatically including websites by following links to crawl and index new pages, there really is no need to manually submit yours. In fact, the main thing you should be focusing on is link outreach and creating backlinks to your web pages – that’s what’s really going to get Google’s attention! Once you’ve got the links, the search engines will do the rest.

At the same time, it doesn’t hurt to submit your site. It’s free to do, doesn’t take very long, and, if you like to stick to tradition, it’s the old-fashioned way of doing things. In our opinion though, it’s pretty much a total waste of time. With so many other marketing methods that can actually benefit your business, why go to the trouble of submitting a site that doesn’t need to be?

So, instead, we recommend putting your efforts elsewhere. If it’s SEO you’re looking to improve, those links we were talking about earlier are a much better use of time, as is optimising your content and creating responsive sites. The internet has moved on, so your business should too.
