When and How to Use DA, PA, and Link Count Metrics

Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA)

When it comes to SEO and link building, there are a ton of metrics that can change your marketing strategy and guide you to search engine success – it can even become a little overwhelming! Knowing what matters and what to ignore, as well as how to implement the data you find, certainly isn’t a task for the fainthearted. But, there are ways you can make your life easier, and one of those is understanding the ins and outs of domain authority, page authority, and link count metrics.

What is Page Authority (PA) and Domain Authority (DA)?

Created by Moz, page authority (PA) is a score from 1-100 that is used to predict how a certain web page is going to rank on search engines. The higher the score, the better the rank! Domain authority (DA) is very similar and also works on a scale from 1 to 100, but instead of a single web page, it predicts how a whole website will rank in the search engines. Both authorities are measured by looking at link data – that’s everything from anchor text to 301s – and a whole lot of other metrics.

What Are Linking Root Domains (RD)?

The third metric we want to talk about is linking root domains. Simply put, this is the number of websites that contain inbound links to a specific website. So, if we’re checking out exampleURL, we might find 300 unique root domains that all contain at least one link that points to the site.

Metrics for Month on Month Reviews

If you’re looking to monitor your month on month link building, here’s what you should be looking at:

  • Linking root domains – Keep track of how yours has grown over time, and definitely make sure it’s not going down.
  • Organic rankings from keywords – It’s not an outright link metric, but it can tell you how your link building has helped boost your SEO. It’s also pretty current – any new links you’ve got within the month should have been recorded and counted by Google.
  • Domain authority – Checking the domain authority of the links you’re getting is a great way to split the more important from the less important, and should be reported in your link building reports.
  • Spam score – You definitely don’t want spammy links to your site, even if the domain authority is great, so keep an eye on this!

How Valuable Are Your Links?

Making sure you’re getting valuable, reliable links to your site is a great way to make sure your link building campaign is going to plan. There are a number of ways to check this, including:

  • The traffic a link is sending your way.
  • Page authority (PA) and domain authority (DA) of the website.
  • Linking root domains to a page.
  • Your search engine ranking and how it changes when you receive a new link.
  • Spam score.

Monitoring your link building using these metrics is a great way to stay on top of your SEO and make sure what you’re doing is working. If it’s not, it’s time for a game plan change!

Of course, link building is a pretty time-intensive task, so if you think all this monitoring and managing is going to get in the way of running your business, why not hand it over to us? After all, it’s what we do!
